Wow, I can't believe that 2010 is almost over! Where did the last 6 months go? I guess time flies when your life is crazy busy!
Of all the productivity tools that I rely on to help me keep my hectic life managable, there is one that is deceptively simple but very effective. It’s not a digital gadget, software program or fancy planner calendar.
So, what is this terrific tool?
It’s a simple question: “What is your higher purpose today?”
This little question helps me to sort through all the chaos and frenzy of my life so that I can focus on accomplishing what is most important. It’s an extremely worthwhile question that has given me direction and focus under even the most trying circumstances.
As wonderful a tool as this simple question has been for me in tackling hectic daily tasks and obligations, it is even more powerful when applied to navigating the New Year.
What’s your higher purpose for the next year?
What will your year be about? What will be your focus? What’s the most important thing you need to learn or accomplish in the next twelve months? What is your "theme" for the coming year?
There will be lots of things going on throughout the year. Some will be anticipated and perhaps even planned. Others will be unexpected. They’ll blind-side us and leave us reeling in confusion and desperation. The year ahead, like countless years past, will be filled with events, activities, responsibilities and problems that may make us feel overwhelmed, frustrated, confused and off-track.
However, if we take the time to define (and keep in mind) our overall purpose for the year ahead then we’ll be able to recover more quickly whenever we’re knocked off balance. Knowing what our year (and our life) is about is a navigational tool…a compass of sorts. It allows us to gather up our wits, regain our bearings, get back track and keep moving our lives in the direction we really want to go.
So as the New Year begins, instead of simply coming up with a list of resolutions that will be all but forgotten by the third week of January, why not ask yourself a bigger, more powerful question?
What’s your higher purpose for the coming year?
Give it some thought over the next few days, then write your answer down and hang it somewhere in a prominent place so that it can guide you in the days, weeks and months ahead.
I’d love to hear your answer. Feel free to share it in the comments section below.
My warmest wishes to you for a very happy, healthy, prosperous and purposeful New Year!
