Does the “daily grind” of your life leave you feeling like you're running on a treadmill with no relief in sight? Because of the unrelenting frenetic pace of modern life, many people find themselves yearning for a simpler, calmer way of living. If you're one of them, here are three very simple but extremely effective ways to put some simplicity and serenity back into your life.
(1) Reduce the clutter.
It's amazing just how much "stuff" we can accumulate in our homes! We buy stuff because we believe it will contribute something to our lives, but the benefit is often short lived…if there is any real benefit at all.Although we may enjoy our material possessions to some degree, the more we accumulate the more of a burden they become. If we don't consciously set limits, our stuff quickly gets out of control and takes over our lives. It not only eats up our cash and our space, but also creates a cloud of chaos, overwhelm and stress that hangs over our heads.
Start de-cluttering your life. Make it a priority to clear out the material possessions you no longer want or need. Toss the junk and donate the good items to a local charity. Not only will doing so free up physical space in your home making it feel more spacious and organized, but it will also make you feel good about helping others who need the stuff more than you do.
Less really is more...more space, more money, more simplicity, more freedom.
(2) Pare down your activities.
An active life is good for you, but not if it leaves you feeling overwhelmed, stressed out and exhausted. Most of us take on far too many activities and commitments.Take a few minutes to think about the things you do on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Write them down.
- Are you spending time on activities that you no longer enjoy?
- Do you have any commitments that you are "stuck with" simply because you were afraid or embarrassed to say "no?"
- Have you taken on any commitments that should really be done by someone else?
- Which activities or commitments can you reduce?
- Which activities or commitments can you eliminate entirely?
(3) Seek out silence.
A deceptively simple way to move your life towards simplicity and ease is by learning to shut out the mental and physical "noise" in your life. Sitting in silence, even for just a few minutes, can significantly reduce your stress level and leave you feeling calmer and more centered. Think of it as a mini-vacation for your mind and spirit.
If you live near a park or natural setting, you can boost the effectiveness of this activity even more by spending time in nature. While not completely silent, natural settings have soothing sounds like running water, singing birds and the rustling of the trees in the wind. These gentle sounds automatically generate feelings of peace and well-being.
Spending time in silence on a regular basis not only helps you to regain a sense of calm but it also gives you an opportunity to reconnect with yourself and hear your own internal guidance. Find ways to incorporate solitude and quiet time in your life each day, even if just for a few minutes at a time.
When it comes right down to it, living a simpler life is about learning how to slow down, focusing on what it truly important and connecting more deeply with your inner self. By simplifying your surroundings, calming your schedule, and enjoying a quiet respite each day, you'll be well on your way to a more peaceful and happier you!
