When I first saw James Cameron’s movie Avatar, I was completely speechless. As my husband and I left the theater after the film, he asked me what I thought of it. I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out. I literally couldn’t find the words to express the extraordinary experience I’d just had.
Besides being totally blown away by the stunningly beautiful scenery and amazed by the film’s revolutionary use of technology, I was profoundly moved by this film’s story on a deep, spiritual level.
I’ve seen Avatar more than once and I’m not ashamed to admit that I was moved to tears each time. Although I'm one of those strange creatures known as an HSP (highly sensitive person) I believe my response to this film goes way beyond that. This movie focuses on themes that are not only near and dear to my heart, but are also ones that I believe are crucial for all of us here on planet Earth.
In order for us to create a better life for ourselves as individuals--and as a species--we need to learn to live in a very different way. This film offers much food for thought and nails down some important concepts that we need to first understand and then learn to apply. Here are the ones I see as key:
- To live consciously and respectfully
- To listen to your heart and live your truth
- To be aware of the interconnectedness of all creation
- To stay connected with spirit in daily life
- To acknowledge and honor the sacred in life
For weeks now I’ve wanted to write a blog post about my feelings about this film and its important messages, but I’ve talked myself out it. My insecurities reared their ugly heads and told me that I was just too much of a sci-fi geek, too much of a spiritual softy and just too "out there." I told myself, "People won't understand and will think you're a bit of a nut case."
So, in spite of the fact that I felt this film had important messages that needed to be shared with others, I kept my feelings to myself and never wrote the blog post.
Then yesterday I came across an article that made me give myself the proverbial "smack upside the head." This article, titled I See You: An Inside Look at the Spirit of Avatar was written by Mike Robbins for Oprah.com. In this article Mike articulated many of the same thoughts and feelings that I have. It was as if he had taken the words right out of my mouth.
Although I was chagrined that I wasn’t the one to have written the article, I was delighted that it had been written at all, especially by someone who would reach a huge audience via Oprah.com. (It was also comforting to realize that if a wise and knowledgeable guy like Mike Robbins had these feelings, maybe I wasn't so "out there" or nutty after all.)
Instead of doing my own spin on things here, I encourage you to go read Mike's wonderful article on Oprah.com.
If you haven’t seen Avatar yet, I highly recommend you to go see it. At the very least it will be a very entertaining and enjoyable experience. But more likely than not, it will be a thought-provoking experience that may profoundly shift your way of looking at yourself and the world around you.
Putting these lessons and the spirit of Avatar into practice in our daily lives will help us grow and evolve in a positive way…as individuals, as a culture and as a species.
Oh…there’s one more lesson here. Next time you feel something is important, have the courage to share it with others. Don't let your insecurities keep you from speaking your truth. :-)

hi , If you have heard of Dr. JOE VITALE he tells of a story in which many people have the same or similar ideas but the people who act on their instincts first are the ones who tend to reap the rewards. Why?
Because GOD or the universe puts outthe same force or energy to every one and thenthe ones who are best attuned to listen and take action get the results rather than the situation that you had happen to you. So next time I would do it first. However there is a way to dove tail on to the OPRAH magazine and save 'face"
If you want to know how be sure that you ask me.

Hi ! Great post .... I felt exactly the same about the movie! Im sure Im HSP too ! I know you were not the only one speechless after seeing it. = )
I see alot of changes online these days such as more people talking about love, spiritual things, honesty and being true to yourself kind of talk...and when I watched that movie knowing it has been in the works for many years. I knew it was no mistake in the timing ... because more people are ready now to live this message now more than anytime before. Perfect Timing!
I am so glad you did go ahead and follow your instinct and write your post ... even though Oprahs writers did too ...great post!
Keep Smilin !!!

Hi Tammy,
Thanks! I’m really glad you enjoyed the post.
It’s interesting that you too have noticed a growing interest in the topics you mentioned. Perhaps it is sign that we, as a species, may finally be undergoing an awakening. It seems that people everywhere are yearning to experience a more meaningful, peaceful, spiritual and noble way of life…not just for themselves but also for everyone on our planet.
What I love about Avatar is that it’s not only an extraordinary piece of “entertainment” but it may also act as a tiny “cosmic nudge” to open our hearts and minds for this awakening. It’s amazing how this movie has “touched a nerve” for people in all corners of the globe. I agree with you…the timing is perfect!
Thank you for sharing your insights. :-)

Hi Frank,
Yes, I am familiar with Joe Vitale and the story you mention. I too am a firm believer that we should listen to our instincts. They will almost always lead us in the right direction. In fact, that was one of the points I tried to make in my post, but I didn’t explain it very well.
The issue for me was not that someone else had “beaten me to the punch” with the article. It was that I had failed to express something that was important to me. It wasn’t until I saw Mike’s article that I realized I had been ignoring my instincts and values. It wasn't about his article. It was about my failing to speak my truth.
Best Regards,
Nadia
