Life can be overwhelming these days…and it is so much more often than we’d like.
There are lots of struggles to go around. Money is tight. Many people can’t find work. Some have lost their homes. Businesses are going under. Those who still have jobs or businesses are working harder than ever. There’s war, disease, global turmoil and natural disasters.
There are tragedies large and small going on all around us. We are reminded of them every time we turn on the TV or talk to our neighbors.
However, there are also lots of good things happening all around us at the same time. People are cured of illnesses and recover from terrible accidents. Long separated family members are reunited. Kidnapped children are found. Criminals are caught and brought to justice. People and communities are discovering new ways to help one another. New scientific discoveries are made that will not only improve our lives but will also help us better understand the universe and our place within it. The sun rises each day and brings with it another opportunity for us to create a better world.
Unfortunately, these positive stories rarely make the news, and when they do they are often little more than sound bites or fillers on slow news days.
It's too easy to get caught up in our own struggles and in the negative circumstances that permeate modern life. We forget that there is also a positive side to life. There most certainly is a "yin" to life’s "yang" and it’s very important us to try to focus on it more often.
Why?
Well, for two reasons:
- It helps bring balance to our perspective and frame of mind.
- We tend to create more of what we think about most often.
Both reasons are important, but the second one is key.
If we want to improve our own lives (and make our world a better place) we need to focus on the possibilities as well as the problems. We need to feel the joy as well as the sorrow, acknowledge the triumphs as well as the tragedies, and see the beauty beyond the chaos and destruction.
The more we focus on the positive the more we create a place for it to take root in our lives and in our world. It not only gives us hope, it actually changes the way we think and act. We become agents of positive change.
So take a few moments today to think about the positive things in your life that you are grateful for. Then tap into their power by incorporating those thoughts into the fabric of your daily life.
Focusing on the positive side of life won't make all of life's problems disappear, but it will empower you to see more possibilities, opportunities and joy.
